Stack Overflow: New Titles Coming Up in July

Books Columns Reviews Stack Overflow

These four titles are all about big ideas: chasing a rainbow, finding your song, creating a garden and learning how to draw, they are a good fit for summer!

Draw with Art for Kids Hub: Animals by Art for Kids Hub (Author) Rob Jensen (Author)

During the pandemic, my kid, like millions of kids (and art teachers) worldwide fell down the rabbit hole, learning how to draw an enormous number of subjects, thanks to YouTube Art for Kids Hub. The charm lies in their easy-to-follow step-by-step guides, how lines get more complex with age, and how you can still follow and learn to do harder things (even stylized cars and realistic animals).

It was high time for the instructions to be available in a book! A perfect activity for summer, this step-by-step guide includes 30 prompts focused on cute animals, with clear instructions that do not need an internet connection to be followed quite easily by children of all ages.

Their proposals include cute pets, jungle favorites, tiny critters, mythical creatures, and more—and it is the first of three other upcoming titles (Foods and Holiday themes). Rob and his family encourage you to have fun as a family and fall in love with drawing.

Up next, this is a book about chasing rainbows:

How to Find a Rainbow by Alom Shaha (Author) Sarthak Sinha (Illustrator)

This picture book features two sisters, Reena and Rekha, who could not be more different: Reena hates rainy days. She thinks everything looks dull under the clouds. Instead, Rekha loves rainy days. She loves to contemplate and feel the world hushing around it, smelling the clean air, and being in tune with her surroundings.

Now, Rekha has just spotted a rainbow and calls her sister to help her find it. I think that is one staple memory of childhood: going after a rainbow and trying to figure out where to find it. I distinctly remember lovely bike rides with the rainbow as my ultimate goal.

Will they find the rainbow?

Up next, this is a novel take about an original garden:

Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden by Christy Mandin (Author)

Garden Glen has strict ideas about what a lawn should look like. Every house and every garden have the same parameters, except one house. A scruffy place on top of a hill, with an Adams Family-like dejected look.

Millie Fleur La Fae moves into this particular house, and with the help of her mother, starts planting her fabulous garden.

Sneezing Stickyweed, Fanged Fairymoss, and Grumpy Gilliflower are just some of the curious names of her flowers and plants, but the townspeople really want to shut it down as it does not coincide with their particular views of what a garden should look like.

Millie Fleur will not be discouraged and will invite her newfound friends to visit and decide for themselves.

Based on the very much real and truly poisonous Alnwik Garden, this book is a lovely take on individuality and quirkiness.

Finally, the next title is all about the music:

The Day Bell Found Her Sound by Lizzy O’Donnell (Author)

Bell is a quiet mouse on the outside but feels bursting with music on the inside.

Fine-tuned to the city, she hears everything around her as a continuous song.

She feels that her town is awash with music, everyone complementing each other with their particular beat.

Bell wants to contribute to this lovely music but is hesitant about what her sound should be. She takes out all of her instruments to the street and starts trying: honking, strumming, tapping, but gets frustrated every time. Nothing feels quite like her.

I think that she will find her voice, because she is doing the very first and most important step, putting herself out there to find her sound.

The Day Bell Found Her Sound is on sale since July 02, 2024
